In my community, a prominent problem is our education system. My own school struggles with funding and the student are not motivated in classes try or interested in the topics.

I 100% agree. My school struggles with funding. So many of our art classes have gotten cut. Our latin program is getting cut, and it’s so upsetting because my school was the only school in our district that taught Latin. My school is also an IB school and I feel that students are not prepared for the IB curriculum due to the lack of funding.

Yeah, our school doesn't value the art program at all, and it doesn't get much funding either.

My community has a similar experience. Our fine arts programs have faced significant cuts, resulting in tangible losses, such as the loss of our 5th grade band program. One of the arts campaigns launched in our district that combats the cut of money from fine arts programs is called ARTSpeaks. It is comprised of parents and educators in the community who feel strongly about keeping a well-rounded curriculum through fine arts. They sponsor talks on everything from the involvement of music in dementia wards to the ability of art to provide more opportunities for disenfranchised communities. You can't control whether or not there will be cuts, but you can have a significant say just by being a vociferous advocate of a well rounded education.

Hi Tatiana,
Oconomowoc is having the same problem with our IB courses. Administration is looking to cut them because they think the AP program is better. I don't think they value the internationalism and worldliness of the IB program.

One of the major issues that seems to loom over many members of my community is the lack of access to information to a diverse set of opportunities that limit the growth of students academically and socioeconomically. Although attempts to increase the awareness of academic opportunities have been attempted, they lack the adequate funding to truly impact the lives of students who deserve and need it.

Obstacles students from minority backgrounds face include but are not limited to resource allocation, lack of support systems, environmental factors, and rigor of curriculum. The government needs to equally fund schools in all regions of Illinois, not just those with a higher demographic of Caucasian students or the areas in which property taxes are highest.

Our school counselors and advisors are not emotionally supportive, our school has had 4 suicides in 2 years and every year, they tell the students the same thing: that they can get help, that they can talk to you, and that you shouldn't be afraid to speak up. Not I nor one of my friends have seen these statements in practice, and I personally have a lo of trouble talking about "feelings" with my counselor. I don't know what can be done about this issue except for reforming how counselors and educators are taught to deal with students' problems.

The same with my school. It might help if the students take the big step in getting people involved in important topics such as these is the counselors don't seem to really care!

When a school is very competitive in terms of academics, sometimes corners are cut to boost numbers and churn out successful students. In the process, high school classes are becoming increasingly devoid of creativity and problem solving lessons. School needs to teach students to fail so that they are set up for success in the future. It's okay to not be perfect all the time; if you're not failing, you're not learning.

I agree with this statement. Often times, schools create ranks which will lead students to be competitive, when the main goal of it should be to get an education.

I would agree. My school is an IB (International Baccalaureate) school, and it gets uber-competitive. Often, standardized assessments are placed as a priority over student wellbeing. This issue causes a lot of people to drop out of the program, lose sleep, and degrade their self-care.

illinois. In my community, a common problem is being put under too much pressure to succeed. When your school constantly stresses the importance of grades, GPA, intelligence, and participation, it's easy to feel stressed.

My home town is Miami, Florida and in my city driving has always been a major issue. Accidents are almost expected for drivers and lives are lost because of it. Stronger regulations for drivers trying to receive their license should be implemented

In my city, the roads are really bad. When i drive along the streets, its very rare where there is not any pot holes.

My dad lives in Wellesley, MA, and I am well aware of the issue of unmaintained roads. Massachusetts is known nationwide for their horrible upkeep of roadways, but their current governor is making strides to improve the infrastructure of the state.

We join the U.S. Army, pay taxes, and are affected by government and presidential decisions, but still the United States Virgin Islands is not allowed to vote for President of the United States.

in my community a prominent problem is drugs and alcohol among minors. Many individuals partake in what they consider recreational activities, not understanding the consequences of their actions. I believe we must educate individuals on drug and alcohol awareness and regulate the use of illegal dealing.
